Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Wurtsboro, New York which is in Upstate New York at my brothers house. He's house is in the middle of a forest surrounded by trees.

Time

This image was taken on February 18, 2014 around 1PM on a cloudy cold winter day.

Lighting

I like days when the clouds are white but not to dark. It creates soft shadows even when the sun is bright and right over head. If this was taken at the same time no clouds with the sun shinning bright shadows would be to sharp colors over saturated.

Equipment

Image was captured with a Canon EOS REBEL T2i and a EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II lens. Didn't have a tripod for this shot. I like using my tripod but sometimes it can cause me to miss shots. I try my best to keep my hands steady and no tripod allows me to react to birds movements more easily.

Inspiration

I enjoy taking pictures of photos of birds. I like trying to capture photos of birds movements. Trying to capture their wings opening. This day I wanted to capture a bird playing in the snow. I wanted it to have a winter feel. Simple background just a bird in the snow.

Editing

I did touch up the photo some what. I played around with brightness and contrast. I wanted the blacks to be darker and the colors more vivid deeper. I add curves and layer masks to areas I want to enhance. Like for example the birds eye I made stand out more. I brightened up the feathers a little to make the small lines curves stand out more. I made the snow a bit whiter was more grey in original shot. I do touch ups to make the photo appear as I see it with my eyes.

In my camera bag

I'm a simple photographer I suppose. I dont carry much. Just my old Canon EOS REBEL T2i and now my new T6i. A EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II, EF-S55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens. A Dolica GX600B200 Proline GX Series Tripod. I don't have any flash equipment.

Feedback

I would say patience is the best advice. I often sit for hours just waiting and then a bird lands I snap and shes gone. I waited a hour for something that lasted only for a few seconds but it was worth it. I snap test shots throughout that time. I shoot in manual mode and the test shots are me adjusting the exposure shutter. Trying my best to have it on the perfect setting for when a bird does land. I have camera on manual focus. This way I can keep snapping tons of photos the lens doesn't have to re-focus in between shots. If I have one specific area I'm focusing on I'll use a tripod. If I feel like the bird will land anywhere in front of me which is usually a big open area I'll just use my steady grip no tripod.
