Location
This photo was taken in my back garden. I was out early in the morning looking for anything interesting and this day lily centre caught my eye.Time
I was out around 8.00am on a warm, sunny July morning. I was still getting used to my macro lens and would head out early most mornings hunting for bugs that were still moving slowly or any new flowers that had bloomed to practice on.Lighting
The lighting for this was just sunlight, it was all that was needed.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon Rebel T2i with a 100mm f/2.8L lens. No tripod but a lot of breath holding to keep the camera steady!Inspiration
I was inspired to take this photo mainly because of the amazing colours! It has become one of my favourite flower shots - and I take a lot. I'm a keen gardener as well as an enthusiastic amateur photographer and am always on the lookout for unusual plants.Editing
I cropped the photo a little to emphasise the amazing stamens and pollen. In my camera bag
It really depends where I'm headed, birds in the woods or somewhere like Niagara Falls, but I generally have my Canon Rebel T2i, 17-85mm f/4.5.6, 70-300mm f/4-5.6 (great for wildlife) and my 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 lenses (just recently got the last one, such a fun little lens!). I also carry a circular polarising filter, Speedlite and a waterproof cover for the camera. Learnt the hard way what a good idea the waterproof cover was and made sure to use it at Niagara Falls last Winter to protect against the icy spray. I had an outing earlier in the year where my camera actually 'died' for a couple of weeks after getting a soaking, and miraculously came back to life after spending time sitting in rice!Feedback
Get down on your knees and check out the details in flower centres and petals, it's amazing the detail and colour you will find, not to mention all the really interesting bugs busily going about their business. If you are using a macro lens take a deep breath, exhale, and then you will find it a little easier to keep as still as you need to!
