Location
This photo was taken from my front porch in Bauxite, Arkansas. Many of my night photos come from my front porch. The darkness is amazing! Without the glow from the big city's lights, the stars in the night sky light up like an old fashioned Light Bright, always beautiful.Time
I do not remember the particular time of day this photo was taken, I am however certain it was at night. (humor)Lighting
I have found through trial and error that having the darkest area you can find will bring out the brightness in the dimly lit sky. It is amazing the number of stars as well as the craters on the Moon. There is just something special, to me, about the darkness, a decent camera, a good lens and the night skies. Somewhere out there is heaven, and I think I take a photo of it every time I shoot the night skies.Equipment
For this photo I used a Sony Alpha, fixed lens camera with 65x zoom. There was no tripod, majority of my night sky photos are either propped camera shots or free-handed.Inspiration
When I worked for an airport near Dayton, Ohio I was the Line Service Supervisor. I was in charge of incoming flights that needed fuel, catering, aircraft housing, etc.. In 2000 I met Gene Cernan, "The Last Man to Walk on the Moon." Being from Ohio and my mother into politics I was also able to meet Neil Armstrong as well as John Glenn. Mr. Cernan seemed the most intrigued by my fascination with our star filled night skies and our Moon. Since becoming a hobbyist photographer I began taking photos of the Moon and night skies, always trying to make them a little better. After the stories discussed with Mr. Cernan about the Moon and his time THERE, it has become an obsession to take the "perfect" Moon photo. But, I owe all the credit to Mr. Cernan, The Last Man to Walk on the Moon.Editing
The only post processing I do to any of my photos is through the edit feature of Windows Photo Viewer. No Photoshop or programs of that nature were used.In my camera bag
Normally I make it a point to carry all of my cameras with me, I never know what type of photos I might take so I try to be prepared. The main camera I currently use is a Canon T3i or a Canon T-5. The lens I choose for most of my shots is a Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens. Great for most any shot.Feedback
Have a steady hand, good zoom lens, and patience. It took many attempts to finally get a clear photo worthy of sharing. Taking photos at night is a great hobby, in my opinion, but is time consuming. Focusing is tricky. Be patient and have fun, you too will get it.
