Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in my home studio. I am a self taught photographer so it's always learning as I go.Time
This is one of my favorite rose images. I took this shot in the late evening hours. I had previously gone to the market and purchased some roses just for this shoot. I read up on water drops and learned that glycerin is commonly used to help the drops stick to the flowers. So, I purchased some glycerin also.Lighting
I used my studio lights for this shot, treating the rose as I would a regular portrait. Two lights one on the left as primary, right and one on the right for fill. I wanted a very rich tone for the image. I have found it a bit of a challenge shooting the color red and getting a richness that I liked. Red, to me, has a tendency to overexpose. So everything was toned down a bit, from the lighting, to the exposure.Equipment
I used my Nikon D7100 and my favorite lens, a Tokina 100mm Macro. I also used my Manfrotto tripod with a cable release as well.Inspiration
I like to look at pictures online and kept seeing these floral shots that just pulled you in. They had a richness to them, many had the dew drops and I just fell in love with those images. So much so that I wanted to try and accomplish this type of shot myself.Editing
Post work was a lot of trial and error. Working with red to me, is just a bit tough. I ended up doing most all of the post work in Adobe Camera Raw. I then opened it up in Photoshop and using the NIK HDR plugin I created the richness I was looking for.In my camera bag
My bag is always fully packed and ready to go. I have my Nikon D610, my favorite lens, a Tokina 100mm macro. I have my hefty 80-200 2.8 Nikon zoom. I also carry my Nikon 24-85 lens and of course my nifty fifty. Also in my bag is my SB910 flash and eneloop batteries. I carry all this in a Domke F2 bag that I love.Feedback
This shot can easily be done with natural window light and maybe a reflector. If you want drops do get some glycerin it really does help. Mix it with some water, I use it at about 50\50 water and glycerin. I purchased a little spray bottle to mix it in and spray with. Be careful not to get it on the walls and anything behind the flower when spraying, it can be a little sticky. Also, It will remain on the flower for days. It doesn't evaporate. Use a tripod and you too can have a shot like this hanging on your wall with pride.
