These images are in the courtyard surrounding the Hale o Keawe at the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau. Representing personal gods and deceased ancestors, the images protect the mana or spiritual powers of the bones inside the mausoleum. As can be seen in the accompanying picture of Hale o Keawe, there are many such images both inside the enclosure, on its fence and around its outside. Also note the fruit being offered to the images to stay their hunger in the spirit world and keep them friendly.
