Location
During a local celebration in a small village by the sea in southern Italy.Time
I remember it quite well as I was strolling around without my tireless Nikon D90, instead I was carrying a small Samsung in my beach bag. It was at night, having spent the evening out for dinner I was on a terrace where I could see some fireworks being shot.Lighting
I noticed the light breeze made the smoke and lights take different shapes, plus the lights in the background served as a context. I took a chance even if the breeze was making the smoke go all over the place.Equipment
Instead of my faithful Nikon d90 I was carrying a small, pocket sized, compact Samsung which had a manual function to set aperture, ISO and exposure. I used the terrace railing as a ripod and set the camera shutter release timer after manually counting the time between each firework.Inspiration
I really like local celebrations, I wasn't able to take any photo that day so when I got the chance even from afar, and with a pocket camera, I just followed my instinct.Editing
No post processing whatsoever. In my camera bag
The charger ( to avoid panic attacks!), basic filters, the basic 18-55, a sharp 35 mm 1.8 ( my favourite for close up and detail), a 70-300 mm, as to cover more or less what I need, a small torch for light painting.Feedback
Fireworks are always a first choice, they are absolutely stunning. I personally always suggest a good camera, even a good compact one can make a difference, a tripod or something that can serve as such , a context. I like fireworks in a pitch black serene night but shooting them in a nice context ( by the seaside, with the city in the background, reflecting in the pool) can be a game changer. Always beware of a windy night, it might cause the smoke form the fireworks to mess up your photo completely.
