I was on a flight from Auckland to Wellington in New Zealand and more often than not the incredible volcanic cones of our mountains are obscured in clouds or one is unlucky and does not get a window seat.. so this time I was lucky and managed to get all the right things working for me.Time
It was bang on middle of the day - so no hard shadows and the most light one can possibly get when flying over a mountain.Lighting
I really had to let mother nature guide me here - and the pilot up front of course - if we would have taken a different course or at a different time of day it may not have turned out to be this good.Equipment
I only used my Nikon D3200 with my travel lens a Tamron 18-270mm, no flash, no tripod just a steady hand and a good window seat with a little bit of glareInspiration
Oh I love this maunga (mountain). It has deep mythological meaning to the local Maori and also doubled as Mt Fuji in the last Samurai. I'd like to say it featured in Lord of the Rings but that was another well known (and similar looking) volcano - incidentally on the other side of the plane..Every time I travel to this region I am amazed how magnificent this perfect volcanic cone looks and how different the light can be during the day - so I was very happy to get this shot out of the plane.Editing
I did very little post processing - I cropped it a little and sharpened the image in Lightroom but that is itIn my camera bag
I don't tend to travel with loads of stuff - I have my D3200 and two lenses - the Tamron 70-270 and a wide angle Sigma 10-20mm - if I have a bit of spare space I pack the tripod (a travel one as well) but that's it - light weight and mobile.Feedback
Try to get a window seat on the right side of the plane when flying from Auckland or on the left hand side when doing the reverse and also fly around midday.
