Thank you so much Carotta! That's exactly how I felt when I saw photos of this famous tree at The Japanese Gardens in Portland, Oregon. Surprisingly, you could walk right by this tree and not even notice it. It is smaller than you think. You should go and see it.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph at The Japanese Gardens in Portland, Oregon. I flew out to visit my son and I told him that I wanted to see the tree that was in a National Geographic magazine. I love trees.

Time

My son and I went to the gardens in the afternoon in the rain and we had to ask where this tree was because the first time we went we couldn’t find it. My son held the umbrella for me while I took photos. We had a good time actually in the rain.

Lighting

It was a constant rain and my son actually held back a branch a little so my camera could peek inside.

Equipment

I believe I shot this with my Canon Rebel with no flash and no tripod.

Inspiration

I was inspired to see this tree because I had seen my photography friend’s fine photograph of this tree that had been featured in a National Geographic magazine. It was joyous to see and photograph.

Editing

I post-processed this in Photoshop. I cropped it and lightened it and I just love to play in Photoshop. I find it to be relaxing and rewarding.

In my camera bag

At this time I had a Canon Rebel with a telephoto lenses and wide angle lenses in my waterproof camera bag. I always carry extra chips and an extra battery which I have learned from past experiences.

Feedback

When you are trying to photograph Japanese trees you have to peek inside unless it’s been trimmed back, and get down low and/or have a tripod about a foot off of the ground. If you go on a busy day for this tree you have to wait your turn for the best position for photography it.
