Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Aberfalls in North Wales this area is a second home to me as I am always out shooting nature.

Time

This is one of my favorite images, I took during winter time around three o'clock so I wasn't expecting to get much out of this area. The result of this shoot in my eyes was a success as I always think if I go out all day shooting and I get one image that I am happy with I find it to be worth the time i put into a shoot.

Lighting

I was quiet lucky with the lighting of this image as I left this area to my last point of the day, It was around 3 clock but I knew that I could potentially get something out of the area. I set up a tripod to get this image right which I stood in the same spot for around twenty minutes just waiting to get the smoothness right of the water flowing down the waterfall.

Equipment

Nikon D300s, Manfrotto tripod, Nikon zoom- Nikkor zzom lens - 18 - 200mm F3.5 - F5.6

Inspiration

I knew this area very well and had visited it a few times and knew the potential in the area and wanted to make a slow shutter speed image. The inspiration of this image came from a photographer called Mark Adamus which he specializes in landscape / nature photography. I saw his images of slow shutter speeds and thought to my self it would be good to create my own. I always say that every one has been inspired by some one but I personally believe that a photographer should always take his own take on a certain area and make it his own.

Editing

After shooting this image in as a Raw format, I opened it in Photoshop and quickly adjusted the lighting and contrast. I worked on the clarity for a while to get the image looking like I wanted it to and then I developed it further by making it into a black and white image which In my opinion made the image look better.

In my camera bag

The first thing i pack is my Nikon D300s attached with my Nikkor zoom lens 18 mm - 200 mm as it is essential to the work I do, I really enjoy the range that the lens has to offer and makes it easier to shoot landscape and nature shoots. It is also essential that I take my manfrotto tripod which is essential for the images that I take and it it ery importnat to my self to get the right focus.

Feedback

I would advice some one that was particular interested in waterfalls to look for areas that are less populated as known and popular one's are always crowded. The reason I mention this first is that you need to take your time and have patience shooting waterfalls you need to get the smoothness of the water right. The biggest advice would be taking your time even if it takes you hours to get it right to the way you want the image to look like right and it will be worth the time an effort you put into it. Shooting waterfalls I tend to shoot with an aperture of around F14, ISO of 100 possibly 200 sometimes and it depends on the light but roughly around second to three seconds of shutter speed exposure.
