Thank you very much, I shot these with a Sony NEX-5 and the Sigma 30mm at 2.8 in downtown Darmstadt, these beetles are actually very rare and listed as an endangered species. Hopefully this one made it.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the streets of Darmstadt. I was on the bicycle when I saw this little fella walking on the pavement so I got off and took a shot.

Time

It's been quite a while now, but it was already in the evening, so that's what created that special lighting in the background.

Lighting

I don't want to make it seem like I knew exactly what I was doing, as I am not a professional. It was already fairly dark so the open lens was a necessity rather than a choice and it was quite hard focusing exactly on the little one while he was moving.

Equipment

I used my trusty Sony NEX-5 together with a sigma 30mm at 2.8. The lens is rather cheap but produces very good results for me. I use manual lenses a lot, but for this shot I am happy that I had autofocus to assist me.

Inspiration

No real inspiration here, it wasn't like I hired the beetle to walk for me. I just saw him and thought, right, this must be a good picture.

Editing

Not much, just a little increase on the contrast and edge sharpening, but its subtle.

In my camera bag

Usually I use my NEX-5 together with a fixed focal lens, such as a Canon FD 1.4 50MM and a lens turbo, plus the Sigma 30mm 2.4 I used for this shot.
