This is Mono Lake. It's a salt lake like the Great Salt Lake in Utah. It's been shrinking since the 1930's as Los Angeles takes a bunch of the water that feeds the lake. When I was there in the 90's it was much lower. L.A. is now taking less water than it used to, and the lake is slowly filling back up. See the Tufa's while you can!
