Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at The Dark Hedges near Stranacuam in Northern Ireland. It featured.in Game of thrones and I thought I'd go on the way home from the North Coast.

Time

I took this photo just after sunset, around 6pm during the early winter.

Lighting

I had reached the hedges later than I hoped and was originally planning on a light trail from and cars driving up the road. I was lucky that a car had parked at the bottom end of the road and illuminated the trees giving it a quite mysterious effect.

Equipment

I only had my Canon 550d with me that evening in a very light tripod.

Inspiration

Being a fan of Game of thrones I didnt want to give up an opportunity of visiting here while in the area.

Editing

I slightly cropped the image and added some vibrance and a small bit of saturation, but generally speaking it's more or less as shot.

In my camera bag

At the minute I'm using a Canon 5d markiii on a manfrotto tripod with Lee filters, but that evening I had my back up equipment in the boot of the car.

Feedback

Most photographers will say the waiting weeks or months for a similar image, I set up to take the image but had a huge slice of fortune when the car stopped and simply back lit the hedges rather than break over the hill and leave a trail. Sometimes a location scout, planning and patience can be replaced with a huge slice of luck :)
