Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Roy, WA rodeo in September 2013.

Time

It was early in the afternoon and I had been walking around trying to spot the best location for getting a nice close up. I actually got yelled at several times trying to get this photo. I was right on the railing and very close to the point where the horses were making their turn. I may have been "that guy" on this day but I think it was worth the trouble.

Lighting

No external flash was used in order to not distract the horses or their riders.

Equipment

I used my trusty Nikon D3100 with my 35mm 1.8 fixed lens.

Inspiration

I really wanted to capture the movement of these beautiful animals. The power and grace they display in these shows just amazes me. For me this photo is all about the horse, its power, and skill of it's rider.

Editing

I did do some post processing work on this photo. Just some basic enhancements in Lightroom to adjust white balance and enhance the clarity.

In my camera bag

I try to travel light and usually only bring two lenses with me when I go places. I also keep two external flash in my bag just in case.

Feedback

I captured this shot while trying to do something new. I would encourage anyone wanting to get a shot like this to be willing to get in the dirt to get the shot. It will be worth it!
