Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken under George Street bridge, a local landmark in Newport Gwent. It was taken whilst mentoring clients in photography for the homeless charity I work for. I have set up with the help of another project worker a camera club which we do after hours. First rule of camera club is... you don't talk about camera club. That is our mantra, taken from fight club and the clients who attend love it.

Time

This was taken at approx 6.30pm, fairly clear sky but as we were under a bridge the weather didn't matter.

Lighting

No lighting required for this photo as the wire wool when set alight provided all the illumination we needed for the shot. We started further away from the boundary walls of the bridge but found the closer we got to them the better the sparks interacted with the surface producing a lot more trails of light.

Equipment

Equipment used was canon 1100d 18-55mm kit lens, tripod and remote shutter release

Inspiration

Inspiration for this photo came from a colleague who had done it before in an open landscape and we discussed trying the same effect in an urban environment. We thought it would be a good introduction for our client into long exposure photography.

Editing

No post processing on this photo apart from a minor crop.

In my camera bag

I have just purchased a canon 70d with an 18-135mm is lens, this will now replace my old camera. along with that I carry a series of nd grad filters, some colour grad filters, and a few different strength stoppers I also have a 75-300mm lense and a remote. I also carry lens cleaning equipment.

Feedback

This is quite an easy effect to accomplish, all you need is some wire wool- obtained at any diy store, a piece of string or rope and a lighter. Then you need to find a dark space and shoot away!. Happy snapping.
