Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Monument valley, on the patio of The View hotel and restaurant. We had just completed a 3 hour guided tour to the back of the reservation. While we waited for dinner, the sun was setting behind us.

Time

I took this just at sunset, looking East at The Mittens.

Lighting

It was an extremely hazy day, as there had been a windstorm earlier. Lots of dust in the atmosphere, accounting for the brilliant magenta's and yellow's reflecting, low on the horizon.

Equipment

I had my Nikon D7100 on a tripod, using a Tokina wide angle 11-16mm lens.

Inspiration

The view as the mittens turned from dull brown to fiery orange as the sun set.

Editing

Just basic cropping and bringing the shadow detail up a bit.

In my camera bag

I took this when I was just starting out. I typically have a Nikon D7200, the 11-16 wide angle lens, 17-50 zoom, 70-300 zoom, and a 35mm prime lens. Various filters, flashlight, batteries and extra SD cards.

Feedback

be there 30 minutes prior to sunset. Keep shooting right up until dark. I found out it's usually windy in June or early summer there. Go in winter for clearer skies, even snow!
