Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a walking tour of Upper Antelope Canyon near Page, AZ

Time

This was taken in the afternoon, about 3pm. hand held, I paused for a moment alone on the tour and looked back to see this unusual pattern above me.

Lighting

Light bounces around quite a bit in these slot canyons. Setting white balance to Shade helps bring out the colors you see.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D7100 using a Tokina 11-16mm wide angle lens. Shot was hand held, natural light, exposure of 1/20 at F 2.8 ISO of 640

Inspiration

I was inspired by National Geographic and the reputation as well as the challenge of photographing these slot canyons. Because of time considerations, i chose to forego the 2 hour photographers tour and simply went along with regular walking tour.

Editing

Very little post processing. Bumped sharpness about 1x and exposure one f-stop.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Nikon 18-70mm as walking around lens, 35mm 1.8 prime, Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 and my Nikon 70-300mm. Only the Tokina has VR. I often shoot on tripod or monopod. Also in the bag, CPL filters, ND filters and remote release when needed.

Feedback

Try to go mid day, 11am - 1pm fior best light, but you will have to pay a premium. It's crowded and dusty, so you won't be able to change lenses, so choose carefully. Guide will offer photo suggestions, even help with settings if you are inclined (I didn't need). Walking tours cannot bring tripod, so if you do not have steady hands, pay the extra and go on photographers tour. Must have a DSLR to qualify.
