Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while walking in Portree on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. It had been raining quite heavily but we went out during a break in the weather. We were wandering along a quite street just outside the town when we heard a cascade of water not far off the road. We pushed through some very wet undergrowth to come across this fantastic waterfall.

Time

This was captured around 1:00pm in mid September

Lighting

I wanted to try and capture a long exposure view - it was quite a broad drop of water. I had my camera with me but didn't have a tripod, but......., I did have my wife along with me. I used her head as the tripod and asked her to hold her breath when I was ready to take the shot

Equipment

I used a Canon 60D with a Tamron 18-270mm lens (my favourite travel lens). ISO of 400, shutter speed of 0.3 and aperture of 22.0

Inspiration

We came across this waterfall quite by accident. I had been experimenting with slow exposure shots of waterfalls and this location seemed perfect. It was close to the road, so was easily accessible

Editing

This shot is largely as taken. I used small amount of green colour saturation to help bring out the foliage and help compensate for what was a very lush and overgrown piece of bush that blocked what little sunlight was available

In my camera bag

When I travel I only take 2 lenses to help keep the weight down. My most used lens is a Tamron 18-270 but I also carry a Tokina 11-16 F2.8. I find the super wide angle great for architectural shots - particularly on the castle trail in Scotland

Feedback

Look for and take advantage of, the unexpected. There's always an image on any walk that's worth preserving, you just have to look for it.
