Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in the morning at Schwabachers landing in the Grand Teton National Park

Time

I took this fairly early in the morning, we were hoping for some nice sun on the peaks but we didn't get out there early enough to actually catch the sunrise.

Lighting

The light was beautiful, although after two or three shots it was beginning to get harsh on the trees and the wind started to pick up and disturb the reflection.

Equipment

Canon 5DM2 and a 24-105 mm lens mounted on a tripod, this was under 1/30th of a second and there is no way for me to be steady handholding that, even with vibration reduction!

Inspiration

This was our first trip to Grand Tetons National Park and I did a lot of research for the trip, reading guide books, buying photo guides and looking at google maps and through flickr and panoramio. Doing this let me see where I wanted to go to shoot and what the best time of day might be. I'd seen pictures with Alpenglow on the mountains first thing in the morning and I was inspired to go out and try to see it and image it for myself. There was no alpenglow (too late for that!) but the reflection and the clouds in the sky were just incredible. I couldn't have asked for better conditions.

Editing

I always have to post process some, I shoot in RAW and there is usually a lack of contrast and saturation compared to what our eyes see or what is in a jpg. This image was adjusted for contrast, saturation and I also used Nik color efex and Viveza to bring out the autumn colors.

In my camera bag

My bag is usually chock full of Canon equipment, for landscapes I use a Canon 5DM3 and for wildlife I use a Canon 7DM2. I also shoot a lot of Infrared now and have a supercolor converted Lumix Gx7 with the kit 14-42 lens, and a standard conversion of my old Canon 7D . I always pack my 24-105 Canon and my 100mm macro lens, Tripod, bubble level and extra batteries! Depending on where I'm going and what I'm shooting I will add either my ultrawide or my telephotos.

Feedback

I knew this was a popular place for sunrise and getting there an hour after sunrise meant I had it pretty much to myself, which was just great, so I would say the most important thing is to know your locations and your weather. Make use of all sorts of resources available to you, from books to smart phone apps you can plan your visit for everything but the weather. For the weather use local resources if you can, it will be more reliable than say, the corporate apps. Talk to the people who live there, most of the people we met were friendly and helpful, you never know when you will get a tip to visit a local place that isn't in any books because you took the time to chat!
