Behind The Lens

Location

I am a self taught photographer and this shot was taken in my home studio in South Africa. Everyday is a learning curve for me and i try to get in as many different shots as possible with every shoot. Photography is a huge passion for me and a LOT of time goes into every shoot that I do, research and communication with the model plays the biggest part in my preparation for the shoot.

Time

This was done in studio, the time doesn't play a big part as studio light where used.

Lighting

In studio its easy to control the lights, but always looking for that different angle and pose that I haven't seen before makes it more interesting when it comes to lighting a scene. In this specific photo we played around to get enough highlights on all the muscles we wanted to enhance, luckily the model was very flexible and had a good sense of humor.

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon 600 D and EFS 18 - 135 mm lens together with studio lights.

Inspiration

This was part of a series that i did with the model on Hip Hop dance poses. Always looking for that new shot no one has seen before I tend to give the model the opportunity to show me all of her unusual poses they just do behind the scenes for warm up or practice purposes. This came up and we started building around it and working the pose until we ended up with this shot.

Editing

Not a great amount of processing done. Just converted to BW and then play with the dodge and burn tools in PS until I am happy with the way the muscles and body lines "pop".

In my camera bag

Currently I am shooting with my Canon 7 D but always have my old faithful 600 D close by. Although its not ideal to shoot through your LCD I cannot resist the angles you can get when you flip open the LCD of the 600 D, you can get in almost anywhere. The first lens to always go in my bag would be my 50 mm Prime 1.4, just love this lens, then my 18 - 135 mm and I hardly ever use my 300 mm.

Feedback

Never be satisfied with two or three shots you see on your LCD, always take more shots from different angles, sometimes the angle we think would work, doesn't! Everything and anything can become extraordinary when you capture it correctly through your lens!
