Location
The photo is taken in the Pomer Marina, Istria, Croatia. It was at the end of one week long regatta, when starting point was this small place at the SW corner of Istrian peninsula. Although this point of the coast knows to be very windy because of crossing of the Kvarner with the rest of the Adriatic, the place where the marina is is very deep inside the land and quiet. This was a long windy day, the stormy weather was predicted for the next day, and this sky was just trying to tell us something about it.Time
It was around 21h in the evening... We were sightseeing Pula and as we came back in the marina for diner, I noticed this drama on the sky. I didn't have time to run at the boat for the tripod, because the clouds were covering the moon so very fast, so I just found small stairs on the dock across, and seat down putting the camera on a stone to be stable for a long exposure. I couldn't find a flat stone, so the original had little bit tilted horizon which I corrected afterwards in PS. Otherwise, everything else looked pretty much like it is on this photo...Lighting
Not much... it was night, with a spectacular drama on the sky from the upcoming storm. It was very clear that long exposure was a must, so I just tried to find a stable and safe place to put mu camera on, since the tripod was on the boat which was little bit far away from here, and the wind was changing the view very fast.Equipment
Nikon D90, with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle lens.Inspiration
Sailing is my big love. And everything that goes with it, including and especially mother nature's light shows at any time of the day. Like this one, and like many others I have and I will take a photo of. Sea and sky always inspire me to play with whatever instrument for taking photos I have in my hands.Editing
As I said before, I did some cropping because the base where I settled my camera was not precisely horizontal. I also might have corrected the contrast and exposure little bit. And removed some brand marks on some of the boats in order to post the image on stock portals. In my camera bag
At this moment, Nikon D7000, mandatory fix lens Nikkor 35mm, one wide lens and one zoom... I am a documentary photographer... I need to be ready for all conditions, yet not too much heavy to carry it with you all the time.Feedback
Well, this was one of the easy ways of capturing sunsets at sea. We were in a marina, and I had a solid ground to put my camera on. However, most of the time we don't dock in days and I do the photos from a moving boat. So my basic advice is to always have a way to stabilize your camera... and yes, you can be creative :)... anything can work, just as long as it is safe enough for the camera. And keep your eyes open and camera close at all times. These kind of nature's light shows are happening almost always unannounced, so you have to be ready with your camera any time.
