Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at beautiful Crandon Beach on Key Biscayne outside of Miami Florida during a business trip.

Time

This photo is just after sunrise, 7:28am. Persistance paid off, the morning prior to this I tried to find access to Key Biscayne Park and sadly found it closed along with all other beach access on Key Biscayne. I returned to the mainland in Miami and attempted some sunrise photos but the rain that day was too much. I returned the next morning determined to find a way and managed to find a parking place a mile away. After jogging the mile with my camera in tow I bypassed the closed gates...even though the sign clearly stated the park opens at sunrise!! I made my way to the beach just in time to see one of the most beautiful sunrises that i've witnessed so far.

Lighting

The lightrays that morning were fantastic. I took about 500 photos with all different settings just to see if I could do justice to the beautiful scene. The more natural the better for me!

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D Mark III with a EF24-105 L series lense. Hand held. ISO 100, f18, 1/500 shutter. 73mm focal length.

Inspiration

I love taking Sunrise and Sunset photos. The natural light and beautiful scenery is very exciting and relaxing at the same time. I couldn't resist taking advantage of the opportunity for beach photos while in Miami. I was very fortunate to be in the right place on this georgeous morning.

Editing

Surprisingly very little and not HDR. The tones of this image are all about the camera's settings. I tried a variety of settings that morning and captured everything from deep blues to deep golds and black water. I love natural looking scenes and although the actual scene to the eye was on the blue/gold side I thought the black/gold look of these settings provided a more surreal experience. I used Adobe Lightroom with a moderate amount of noise reduction and sharpening to slightly bring up vibrance, only 10. and slightly adjusted highlights, shadows, whites and blacks all under +/- 20. I also slightly bumped up the exposure by .3. Everything else was as the Camera set it.

In my camera bag

I probably carry too much but I would rather be as prepared as possible! I love my Canon backpack that holds my Canon 5D Mark III with extended battery pack. L series lenses: 24-105 f4 IS, 24-70 f2.8 II IS, 70-200 f2.8 II IS and a 100-400 f4.5 IS. My Vanguard Alta Pro 263AT Tripod is never far from my reach. Extra batteries, Extra Storage Cards, Battery Chargers, Lens wipes... Like I said, probably too much!

Feedback

Persistance, planning and experimentation. Don't be afraid to try different things and think of where to take your next photo. Get out and explore and scout locations that you think might be great at different times of the day or night. Take advantage of down time even while on a business trip, such as I was for this shot. Experimenting with different settings and focal lengths can provide some interesting even unexpected results sometimes!
