Behind The Lens

Location

The shot was taken at the back of a massive communal garden that my grandparents are part of. There is a bit of forestry in the garden, and right at the back of this is a very thin clearing, which overlooks a second garden and other properties. This was the first time that'd I'd worked with Cecily. I found her during a photography evening, where she has been asked to come along to do some first-time modelling.

Time

The shot was taken on a sunny August afternoon in 2013. There was quite a bit of breeze, which was prefect to play with the model's strands of hair. The model already had her hair in the braid when she first arrived to shoot. She began to take it out, because we had previously disgussed having her hair down, but I stopped her. It looked perfect.

Lighting

Plenty of sunshine, but it was fairly muted, as we were at the back of the forest area. However, there was still enough light to highlight the model's skin and hair.

Equipment

This was taken with a 50mm 1.8 lens and a Canon 550D. I have upgraded my equipment since, but I'm still amazed at the images that little camera could produce.

Inspiration

It began with the dress. My grandma has the most amazing, humungouse collection of vintage clothing, which she has collected over the years from fairs, car boot sales... etc. She has boxes and boxes of clothes, all labelled and ranging from 20s to 80s - not to mention all the lace and silk garments, stashed away in the draws. I decided that I wanted to do a shoot inspired by Juliet, from Romeo & Juliet, and so sort out a white and lace dress from the large store. I specifically wanted white and lacey, as it went with the whole 'english rose' demeanour I was looking for, as well as symbolising a nightgown, from the Romeo & Juliet balcony scene.

Editing

The image is definitely post-processed (with Lightroom), but I'm not sure how much I did. Not too much, I imagine. The image was taken three years ago, and I have changed computers and programms since then, so I wouldn't be able to say exactly what I did.

In my camera bag

I normally work with a Canon 7D and 85mm 1.8 lens, and that's all I normally have in my bag. Apart from the odd collection of props, depending on what shoot we're doing. Recently, along with the camera, I also had a skull candle, dagger-style letter opener, green gauze, snake bangle and an illustrated book about the moon - in my bag. It all depends on the shoot!

Feedback

Get the mood right and keep shooting. This wasn't a one-off image, this was taken three-quaters of the way through a full shoot. We shot in lots of different locations within the garden, and got lots of different shots that I love. However, this shot is particularly my favourite, as I believe it brings across Juliet's love for her Romeo as she gazes out. There is also a sense of sadness in the image, as she knows that they can never be together. Even if you think you've already got the perfect image, keep going. You might get something else that perfectly encapsulates what you've been looking for.
