Behind The Lens

Location

I don`t have any kind of great studio or something like that so I have to be creative. I knew the photo should show a forest so I searched for wooden things in my flat as a backround. So I finaly came to the table in my kitchen and I know it`s really simple but that`s it. Dark wood and the camera fit perfectly together. That was the first part of the photo, the wooden backround with the camera on it. The second place was a nice little spot in the forests near Regensburg that I accidentally found on a bike tour with a friend. This place got something mystical for me and when I got the idea for this photo I instantly thought of this place for shooting it. So I decided to came there with a good friend of mine and did the second part of the photo.

Time

Kind of funny because I was at a party on saturday night and when I came home and just wanted to go sleeping I had the idea of this photo. So I called a friend who I thought would be great for this picture at something around 5:00 am and told her that I wanted to shoot her in the forest the next morning. I think it was 9:30 am when the shot in the forest was taken. I wanted this feeling of a fresh day when the sun was allready up but you still got the whole day for you. The photo of the camera on the table was taken at the same day in the afternoon. Nothing special about this just normal day light was necessary so the time of the day was not realy important.

Lighting

I think about the lighting for the shoot of the camera is nothing worth about to tell except that I wanted natural light for it. The part in the forest was more interesting. In my mind I got something fresh and kind of innocent feeling of the light. So i decided to shoot it early at the day. But there should not be this kind of romantic feeling you get when you shoot at sunrise. It simply should feel fresh and facilitative.

Equipment

For both photos I only used my Canon 600D with the 50mm 1.8 lens. Simple but it worked well and in my opinion nothing more was necessary.

Inspiration

I don`t know what exactly inspired me to take this photo because it was taken after a party and at my way home i kind of lost myself in my mind. But I think it was simply the thoughts what it means to call yourself a photographer that came me at this time. And for me a big part of being a photographer is also showing things you don`t want to see. It can be a photo about war, conflicts, death and so on. That doesn`t mean there are no good things you can shoot but for me I also got a bond to show the bad things. And in this photo I got death. A girl hanging in the woods because she didn`t see another way out. But another reason for this photo also could have been the alcohol. We will never find out. ;)

Editing

Yes of course there was post-processing but in the end nothing special. I worked with Photoshop. First I edited the colours of the photos a little bit. The table with the camera on it was i bit to bright so i made it a little bit darker and edited some red to it so it looks more noble. On the camera I pushed the black areas a bit for more contrast. The photo of the forest I take the colours a bit back so I got a more dreamy thing on it. The biggest part of my post-processing was to make the girl "hanging". So I made the box she was standing on disappearing by the same photo on it without the girl and made a mask for this part. In the end i layed one photo upon the other and also worked with a mask for the final shape of the forest on the desk.

In my camera bag

The "daily" photobag is very simply for me. My Canon 600D and the 50 mm lens. I love to be minimalistic at this point. For sure when you got a special shooting you have to take lights, different lenses and alle this stuff with you but my normal bag is just my camera with a lens. And you can do great stuff with it !

Feedback

I think the most important thing about this kind of photography is the idea behind it. This one picture you got when you think about a specific topic. And then when you think about a topic which is important to you, you allready got a picture in your mind for sure. So it`s only up to you to got out and show the world what you`re thinking about this and share it!
