Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while traveling on business through Vancouver, Canada. I saw this car sitting on the side of the street and the styling of the car was really intriguing to me. The car had the stylish and sophisticated look... a timeless classic. And the yellow color for this make and model perfectly complimented the vehicle.

Time

This is one of my favorite images. During some free time on my business trip, me a some of my colleagues were wandering aimlessly through Vancouver and stumbled upon this vehicle. It was mid-day with overcast skies that are typical of the pacific northwest. I wanted to capture some photos from within the city and this vehicle was one of them I caught that day.

Lighting

Lighting was really poor when I took this photo, but I knew this was the only opportunity I would get to capture this vehicle. So I adjust my ISO to compensate for the lighting condition and took the photo in RAW, knowing that I would be able to touch it up in Lightroom. RAW photos is the best way to go. It can save a not so great darker image and turn it into an awesome picture with post processing software.

Equipment

I took this shot with a Nikon D7100, the lens was a Nikon 18-140 kit lens, f6.3 at 27mm, with ISO 1250. I increased the ISO due to the low levels of light created by the overcast skies.

Inspiration

The styling of the vehicle is a timeless classic. Everyone has seen classic cars on the streets and in car shows... they always turn heads and get double takes. I took one look at this vehicle and instantly said to myself, "this will look great with selective coloring". It was a no-brainer for me.

Editing

I only use Adobe Lightroom for my photo post processing. On this image, I wanted the center of attention to be the vehicle, so I used selective coloring to keep the yellow color of the vehicle and made the rest of the background in black and white. I also added some vignetting to draw the viewer to the vehicle and contrast to make the vehicle stand out. I liked this photo so much that I had it printed on a canvas which I display at my business office. I get compliments on the photo all the time.

In my camera bag

I have a camera backpack which I keep stocked with several lenses, to include a wide angle, telephoto, portrait, and macro lenses. Filters are always with me as well as a sturdy tripod. I am a opportunistic photographer, so I never know what I might want to shoot. So, I wander with my camera gear from time to time and have a variety of camera gear with me for a variety of situations. You just never know what you might run into which will make a great photo.

Feedback

Experiment! Snap photos of all kinds of different things and have a good post processing software. Look at the photo both in color and in black and white. And don't be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to post processing. I process my photo to my own liking. Some turn out really good, and others not so much. But it is all a learning experience which will only make you better over time. Be patient and the great photos will come in due time with practice.
