Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Delamere Forest on the outskirts of Liverpool England. Even though the forest boasts many footpaths, sometimes you need to take a walk on the wild side, explore, take risks, but stay safe. You never know what's out there.

Time

At a time when the autumn light is cool and the day is drawing to an end and it's deathly silent.

Lighting

The lighting is all natural. It was a perfect moment to take the shot. I noticed the sunlight flooding in through the trees and it was time to go for it.

Equipment

I used my Samsung nx300 with an 18-55mm kit lens, my go to camera when I'm hiking, small, light and punches well above its weight. No tripod or flashes needed.

Inspiration

Nature is an inspiring element to life, just walking around taking in the area is enough to inspire any photographer amateur or pro. All said and done, National Geographic is renowned for inspirational images. The composition of this image was in front of me as I was walking, It just draws you into the photo, hypnotic almost.

Editing

When I'm sat at my computer, I try not to use too much processing. I've learnt and 'still' i'm learning to try my best not to crop and use enhancement tools. But in this image a slight crop to frame the trees and path, and a little colour adjustment is all it needed.

In my camera bag

When i'm away from the studio and on the move, the essentials is all I take. Primary camera and a small back up camera with various lenses for landscape, macro etc. we all have good cameras on our phones these days, so that's three. A Kamay K888 compact tripod. Four spare batteries for primary and secondary cameras. Extra memory cards. Lens cleaning kit. Samsung galaxy note 10.1 tablet to view images on a larger screen and I use a kingston mobilelite wireless storage reader to transfer images. I carry other waterproofing kit, bags n stuff for those heavy rain moments (I live in England, but you get used to it). A Swiss army knife or multi tool for tripod or other kit malfunctions. Plus a good first aid kit for those boo boo's. All in all, every trip needs a tailor made bag.

Feedback

Not many people know what's on their doorstep. Research areas near you. I found areas near where I live, went on some shoots and produced shots that surprised people who didn't believe that they were taken in pretty much our backyard. Go off the beaten track, open your eyes and you too will be surprised. Experiment with natural light and the settings on your camera, the effects you produce can be amazing. Step out of the box.
