Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from Evandale Park on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia facing towards Surfers Paradise.

Time

This was taken very early just after first light at about 5am, i remember being unsure of where to shoot the sunrise from, so i just followed some nice cloud cover to Evendale Park and got set up while the colours turned up.

Lighting

I did use a ND variable filter just so i could do a longer exposure without the light getting blown out.

Equipment

I used a Canon 6D with a Canon L 17-40mm lens on a Velbon tripod with a variable ND filter and a camera remote for a longer exposure.

Inspiration

I have a list of local spots i am wanting to shoot and capture amazing sunrises from as i love shooting sunrise. On this day i just went were i thought conditions were best and was not disappointed.

Editing

In camera raw i just turned the highlights down a little and shadows up a little then sharpened, i don't really like spending too much time messing with my photos unless really needed.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a Canon 5dmkii with a 50mm prime, and a Canon 6d with a 17-40mm lens and i will try to have my canon powershot g15 on me as much as possible if i see something during my day that i would like to quickly shoot.

Feedback

I think it is good to get to a sunrise location 15 to 20 mins before first light. This gives you plenty of time to find composition and the opportunity not to miss anything that can quickly change during a sunrise.
