I took this photo in my friend Ben Stone's Tattoo parlor in Derby. After spending the morning drawing up some designs we had settled on a favourite and it was time to get down to busness!! As I got comfy Ben was inspecting his needles... The perfect time to grab a couple of un posed in the moment shots of him engrossed in his craft..Time
This was taken in the early afternoon, it was quite an overcast day but was still very bright so plenty of natural light was coming in through the large windows..Lighting
The room had quite a lot of natural light coming in through the large windows giving Ben a gentle back light but the main light in this image was an led working light which Ben is holding his equipment up to for inspection.Equipment
This was shot with my first real camera a Nikon D300 with a 1.8 50mm lense. This was my goto setup for carring around, not as convienient as a zoom lense but the quality and speed of focus you get with a prime lense makes up for it. I often find that if you give yourself less options you tend to get more creative with what you have...Inspiration
I try and take my camera everywhere with me and was keen to get some pictures of my new tattoo as it was being done. I noticed Ben was up to something that looked interesting and he was totally engrossed in what he was doing, that gave me the perfect opportunity to get some candid shots of him. It's great if you can catch somebody in a moment.Editing
Straight out the camera this photo had quite a strange colour to it. The daylight from outside was very white and the lights in the room were very yellow the almost blue led light fromthe lamp against Ben's face made for a weird mix. I took the Saturation & Vibrance right down then boosted the Contrast and Whites and pushed the structure and added a bit of grain then cropped to get a gritty up close look..In my camera bag
I'm always buying new bags.... (It's like a quest to find the perfect one) So this is a tricky question. My favourite body Sony A7r always comes along, then is got to be followed by the Sony 16-35 mm and the Sony 55mm Zeiss (so sharp!!) and my new buddy the Nissin i40 Flash.. That would be my have to have crew.. Plus a Feisol Tripod if I'm out for Hdr of Landscapes. (Oh and a few super cheap IR Remotes)Feedback
If you're trying to get candid images like this it can be tricky with strangers because once you have asked someone to take their picture they often behave differently, but on the other hand if you don't ask they can take offence.. You have to try and suss out the situation as you go... I was lucky here because the subject is a friend..
