Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken at Blåvatnet, which means The Blue Lake in Norwegian. It is located in the infamous Lyngen Alps, not far from Tromsø City. Blåvatnet receives its water from the Lenangen Glacier, and this is what gives the lake its intense and beautiful colour.
Time
It was taken late October around 4PM. I remember it being extremely cold and windy. I had my camera on a tripod standing in the river but didn't have a remote release at the time, so I had to balance on two rocks to reach the release button on my camera. At one point I almost fell in, which would have made for a very unpleasant 2 hour hike down to the car. Luckily I was able to regain my balance and take the shot.
Lighting
Not really much to say about lighting. It was all natural sunlight, and I believe the exposure time was set to 30 seconds at ISO 100.
Equipment
For this shot I used my Nikon D800 with a Sigma 20mm f/1.8 lens, and of course a tripod. I also used a Cokin Z-pro graduated neutral density filter to darken the sky a bit.
Inspiration
Growing up in Tromsø, Norway, beautiful landscapes are not hard to come by. Drive 30 minutes in any direction from the city center and you'll see some great scenery. I have always been fascinated by the amazing beauty that the nature has to offer, and seeing photos from this location taken by other photographers, of course inspired me to take some of my own.
Editing
The photo got some colour correction in Lightroom, as well as some added contrast and sharpness.
In my camera bag
I shoot landscapes, products, fashion, weddings and more, so what equipment I have in my bag will depend on what I'm shooting. When doing landscapes I always try to pack as light as I can. My D810, 14-24mm, neutral density filters, remote release, tripod, cleaning kit, and some extra batteries usually does the trick.
Feedback
My advice would be to do your research. A couple of weeks before and there would be no snow on the mountains. A couple of weeks later and the lake would be frozen. Know the times for sunrise and sunset, and be aware that because of the mountains, the sun will disappear several hours before sunset. Bring a head torch so you don't have to walk back in the dark, and make sure you are dressed for the weather, or you'll be turned into a popsicle long before you even reach the location.
