A winter day in Gainesville, Fl. at the Santa Fe/Gainesville Butterfly Garden. I was watching carefully for something to be awed by and the size and color of this guy sure did the trick.Time
It was late afternoon, overcast and windy. There were many people there and just so many butterflies and moths just fluttering about. There were small birds and the moth was just...there. Not a care in the world and big, bold, ready for a close up.Lighting
The lighting was very over cast and I just had to take multiple photos from different distances to get a great photo of how big and colorful this moth was.Equipment
A Samsung digital camera that was fixed lens, and, limited options to fix focal issues. I just took the photo holding the camera since I wasn't allowed a tripod in the butterfly garden.Inspiration
I thought how beautiful and bold and colorful that creature is and he's the span of the tree trunk, he was eye catching and I had to take a photo to show the kind of big and beautiful creatures they grow into that we get a chance to see if were lucky.Editing
Some lighting touch up and cropping to center the moth as the main part of the photograph and not the other trees and bushes. In my camera bag
I have lens filters for UV light, glass, morning, you name it I have a filter for it. I have a mini tripod I carry extra batteries for the camera charged and ready to go, I have a macro lens and wide angle lens, I have a kit lens. Extra sd/memory cards. I have things like colored cellophane to put over the kit lens, I have a lens/filter for mirror and water surfaces I like to use.Feedback
Patience, patience, patience. Other people will be in your way, equipment decides to malfunction. Just be patient and take as many photos (and delete as many photos too) as you need to. Also play around with settings while you're there if your object is not moving about and wanting to leave/fly away.
