I spent all morning with my mentor Robin and my 5 year old at a New Hope Park in New Hope, MN. This photo was taken in the Wildflower Garden next to the Creek and the Butterfly was so patience with me and posed for several photos. I was so luck to have such a great subject.Time
This was about 9 in the morning I believe. We wanted to catch the dew and we had already been taken pictures for two hours.Lighting
It started as a cloudy day and by the time this photo was taken the sun was creating great sunbeams and the clouds were breaking up. It turned out to be a great day of shooting.Equipment
I am also a beginner and my camera is a basic Cannon Rebel XTI with a 75-300 mm lens. I like to use telephoto to do macros because I get more detail that way. I don't use a tripod. I tend to use the surroundings like a fence, stump or my body. I learned a few tricks from a broadcast hand held camera man on how to use your body as a tripod. It worked pretty well for concert photography, but I'm learning for nature I will have to start changing my habits.Inspiration
When I'm taking pictures I try to mimic what I have seen in classic art. Paintings like Van Gough, Monet, Pollock, and others. I want my photography to remind you of a famous art piece you love, but real. This picture just screamed Monet to me although he never painted it.Editing
I don't post-process anything. I want to see what I can do with just a camera and God's creations. In my camera bag
I normally carry in my bag my Cannon Rebel XTI, a 35-75 mm lens and a 75-300 mm lens, extra memory, extra battery, lens caps, wet wipes, hand sanitizer (I'm a little germ a phobic), a granola bar, and my cell phone. I try to travel light it helps when tracking animals. However my bag has been squeaking a little so I might put some WD40 in my bag to take care of that noise.Feedback
I'm sure there are so many others who have done better that I should be asking them for tips. The only tip I have is the one Robin gave me: Most insects have a special spot and if you wait long enough they will see you are a threat and start to pose for you. Also always be grateful and thank them for their help. You will find that nature will start behaving for you if you have an attitude of gratitude.
