I took this photo just outside of Moss Vale in the Southern Highlands of Australia overlooking one of my favourite rural properties. I am a self taught photographer and coming from the city to now living in the country I am always snapping away at the beautiful rural sceneryTime
It was sunset and I was actually driving into town because I had forgotten to get the milk! I always take a camera with me wherever I go since moving to the country and when I saw the sunset reflecting on the dam, I had only seen another sunset like this a few years ago. So I knew this was a time to stop and take that shot! I didn't have a tripod so I had to balance the camera on the roof of my jeep so I could get the right height to get a good amount of reflection on the waterLighting
This was one of those gorgeous rural sunsets I had heard about. Growing up in the city I had never seen these. But because the air is so clear here and you can see forever, the sun just gets these warm red and purple hues. It's just a knockout sight !Equipment

I have always wanted to take a burning sunset with trees silhouetting and I have never had the trees around before at the exact right time to get that perfect silhouette. The fact that I also got a reflection on the water made it so exciting. All the elements came together for me in a single moment of time, it was an amazing experience and I love having the photo to look back and remember it. I am really glad I stopped and took this shot!Editing
I took this photo before I started delving into luminosity masks and stuff and I was not really shooting multiple exposures at this point as I had been doing it a lot. So this was really shooting from the hip. In post process, I took down the highlights a little and used a Nik Skylight filter to even out the warm tonesIn my camera bag
I always have my Sony NEX7 with kit lens in my bag everywhere I go, even just to get the shopping. I live in the country and the lighting, weather conditions in the mountains are always changing and quickly too. I enjoy my country drives, there is always something to see and photograph. At the time I took this photo I had got into the habit of taken my Nikon with me. But it's big and bulky to always have with me. So I bought the Sony as a foray into mirrorless and it's a great camera!Feedback
Either mornings or evenings I try to get out photographing a few times a week, the light is always spectacular. Both of these times of day you are going to get great light for weather conditions like fogs and sunsets. I find with the digital cameras you can push them further. To my eyes, the light was nearly gone, it looked too dark to be taking pictures but I was impressed with what the camera was showing me in the preview window. So don't be afraid to keep shooting even if it seems like it's too dark, the camera's sensor is very impressive when picking up the light!
