Amazing image! Really love the contrast and the composition. Would have been beautiful even without the surfer, but the perfectly placed, perfectly timed surfer really takes this to the next level!

Location
This photo was taken during a winter storm that hit the southern beaches of Sydney . The east coast low that these weather conditions are called caused huge swells. A few brave surfers decided to test their luck against these monster waves.Time
Myself and a couple of photographer friends braved a cold winters morning and headed to the coast for sunrise to shoot the big swells .Lighting
The sun provided a great source of side lighting to add texture to the water and cast a shadow of the surfer.Equipment
The image was shot with a canon digital slr and a 70-300 zoom lens.Inspiration
The huge swell was a added bonus to this sunrise shoot and added another element to photograph.Editing
Other than changing the photo to black and white and adding a bit of contrast for a bit more drama and a crop, the image was pretty much straight out of the camera. In my camera bag
I usually try to travel as light as possible so try to keep equipment to a minimum. A wide angle lens and telephoto lens , plus the camera and a couple of nd filters and grey grads made up my shooting gear.Feedback
The right weather conditions are a must to create drama like in this image. Also a telephoto lens the bigger the better to get close to the action.
