Location
I took this in my living room or empty dining room... It is now his play area in our house.Time
I think it was in the afternoon. It was more of a fun shot that I wanted to try with my son. It wasnt the darkest room but nothing a little Photoshop couldnt fix.Lighting
The lighting was all from the Christmas lights. Very simple and easy.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D Mark II with a 50 mm 1.8 lens. These lenses are so nice because they cost almost nothing, $100. That cost for 1.8 f stop is well worth it. I didnt use a tripod or any flash for this shot. I did have the ISO up to 500 or so I cant remember exactly. But I did this so I could freeze his movement as he wasnt staying still for me and I wanted the shutter speed to be at or above 1/200 second.Inspiration
I saw a picture like this on Pinterest and I thought I could do this with little to no equipment.Editing
I use Photoshop on every image. Ive won awards for retouching so when it comes to Photo editing I love manipulating the images to look their very best. Or if nothing else to give it a certain look that I like to have in my images. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 5D Mark II with my Canon 24-70 mm L II 2.8, Canon 70-200 L II 2.8, and my Canon 17-40 L 4 lens.Feedback
First if you have a super fast lens this shot will be super easy. Anything below 2.8 will work. Its best if you have a camera that has low noise with higher ISO. This way you can get into a dark room to shoot something like this and up the ISO to say 1600 and shoot at 2.8 or better and have no problem getting your shutter speed to be around 200 or higher. After you get the shot you are looking for I like to bump up the highlights and lower the shadows... Basically you are just adding contrast to the photo. If you like you can make it black and white like I did. I use Lightroom and just click the black and white button and add contrast as I see fit. In this photo I masked out the red hat but I also added in some red to it with a curves adjustment brush back in Photoshop. The actually red almost looked grey so in order for it to look right it needed to pop from the screen hence the reason for adding more red. There are several ways you can adjust the red, one is by HUE saturation and change it to the reds and adjust your color from there, or you can use a curves adjustment brush and do the same thing really by just going to the red channel and adjust to the color you like.
