Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a music festival called Vans Warped Tour. This was the first I had attended the festival. At the time I had taken no photography classes, so I had little experience, but I loved the way this one came out.

Time

This was the first band I saw that day. I remember trying to buy a list of the set times and hearing the band that this girl is in, Tonight Alive, start playing. They are one of my favorites, so I practically sprinted to the stage to watch them. Vans Warped Tour is a festival that starts at about eleven and ends around ten, so I was determined to see as many bands as I could. This photo was taken on July 20, 2012 at 11:42 AM

Lighting

Since this photo was taken outside, I had little say on what the lighting looked like. The day was overcast, so there wasn't as much light as a sunny day. Despite the bad weather, I feel the gray sky helps make the singer stick out.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon PowerShot ELPH 100 HS. This was before I started getting really into cameras, so I had a very basic point and shoot.

Inspiration

When I took this photo, I was enthralled by the band's performance. This was the first time I had seen this band and they put on an amazing show. I took this photo because she was in a perfect position for a great photo without really knowing it. She looks to happy to be up on the stage and I knew I had to capture this moment. There are very few 'picture perfect' moments during a concert because the band is moving around so much and I knew this was one of them

Editing

No, I didn't. At the time, I had little knowledge of photography, so I didn't have any programs to enhance my photos.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon EOS Rebel T5i body along with my 18-55mm Lens with me when I can. At concerts, like where this was taken, you need a photo pass to have a camera with a removable lens, so to these events I bring my Canon Powershot SX500 IS. When I'm shoot with my Canon EOS Rebel T5i, I usually also have my film SLR as well. Other than the cameras, I sometimes have a tripod and of course extra batteries for everything.

Feedback

Concerts can be a tough place to take photos, especially in a club setting. The key is to have your camera ready at all times because the performers usually do picture worthy things when you least expect it. If you're shooting at an outdoor music festival and the weather is good, take as many pictures as you can. The nature light is really helpful in getting good shots. If the weather isn't good, try to caught the band when they are near the edge of the crowd or if they go to the crowd. This way you can utilize what light the sky is giving you. It is also important to try to get them while they are standing still or almost still. This will produce better pictures.
