I took this photo at Colorado Lagoon in Long Beach CA, near my home. There is a nice variety of seabirds that live and fish at the lagoon. The colorado Lagoon is seawater so at low tide a good many of shorebirds are there hunting.Time
This photo was taken around 7:00am in the morning . I noticed a lot of Snowy Egret's were down there at that time. So i started going in the mornings trying to get good captures of these birds.Lighting
It was as overcast morning . I liked the look of the photo's I was getting at that time of day so I kept on going down there around 7:00am.Equipment
I was using a Sony a57 with a Sony 75-300 lens. I do not use a tripod when shooting birds. I like to follow there movement as I shoot. No flash was used while taking this photo.Inspiration
When I first started shooting I went down to the Lagoon and noticed a wide variety of birds living there. I got a couple of nice captures and I was hooked! I kept going down there chasing birds around and trying get that one great shot. I especially like the Snowy Egrets they seem to be very photogenic. It kinda turned into an obsession and that is what got me really into photography. Now I have branched out into other subject matter but it all started with these Snowy Egret birds.Editing
I try to keep my photographs looking as natural as possible, so I don't do a lot of post-processing. I might bump the saturation for the color to pop a bit on some photo's. I do some cropping as well or play with the highlights on some. But really I like to try to keep it to a minimum. In my camera bag
I carry a laptop bag with my Sony 18-70 lens and my Sony 75-300 lens. A Rayban lens wipe, I shoot at the beach a lot and if it's windy sea spray will get salt buildup on the lens. So wipes do come in handy. Maybe a bottle of water and thats about it...Feedback
When shooting birds you have to have patience and be quite. I usually find a spot to sit and let nature come to me, instead of trying to walk up on birds hunting or feeding. They aren't big fans of humans. So post up and wait it out! Kind Regards, J.Luke Smalley
