Location
This photograph was taken at a vulture hide in the Drakensberg, South Africa. For some reason the vultures were only doing fly-overs but this Jackal Buzzard gave us some great entertainment and shots.Time
When we first arrived at the hide about 5am there were only jackals around but the birds soon arrived. I remember a friend saying "don't worry if the vultures don't pitch, you never know, a Jackal Buzzard might arrive and give you some spectacularly colorful shots under wing". Many a true word said in jest!!Lighting
There is nothing like the early morning light. It's the absolute best!Equipment
I was using a Canon 7D, with a 100-400 lens, on a tripod.Inspiration
I had seen photographs by other photographers showing the interaction between jackals and vultures. Their battles on the edge of the Drakensberg cliffs were magnificent. I was hoping for something similar.Editing
Very little. Crop and some small adjustments. In my camera bag
I have a 650D and a number of other lenses for wide angle and landscape shots.Feedback
There is so much choice in South Africa with the game parks, the beaches, the mountains and even your average back garden. But, if you want dramatic shots then you have to put yourself in front of a dramatic situation.
