Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in one of our many trips to the beach this past summer at the New Jersey shore.

Time

I took this shot at my son's and I favorite time of the day. When he and I could just hang in the quite side of the beach as the sun comes down and relax from the previous play and run that an earlier day at the beach would provide us with. It was about 6:44 that day when I snapped this particular shot.

Lighting

Natural light at is best, a summer sunset by the beach. At that point my options were limited as to shoot from where I took it or go in the water to capture him from the front. I didn't want to interfere in his moment by asking him to turn around. So I decided to take it against the son and to my surprise I got more than I bargain for. My principal idea was to capture his silhouette in movement but fortunately I was able to still capture a more clear figure of my subject. The way everything blended once the sun starts to go down.

Equipment

All I had at hand was my Canon EOS 6D, shot handheld through an 85.mm 1.8. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

As I was wrapping our trip to the beach I turned and noticed my son wasn't yet ready to leave. I found him dancing and sort of singing to his own rhythm. I couldn't help but grab the camera out of my bag, take a guess on the setting before the light leaves us or my son stops dancing. A few adjustment later this is what came out. I was just as amazed of the result as happy I was able to immortalize my son's joy and make a memory that is worth talking about and share with others.

Editing

I wanted to keep as much of the natural result of this photo. Which might be imperfect but it tells exactly what my eyes saw at the moment. Raised the exposure and contrast to come with the final version. Also the blue channel in curves was lightly strengthened to help the contrast.

In my camera bag

I travel light most of the times. In my bag is mostly 1 Body: EOS 6D, two Lenses 85mm and 35mm. Two SD Cards, White balance card, extra battery and wipes for the filters. Aside from that in my car I keep tripod and a 42in reflector.

Feedback

I say I took this photo by chance. To me, my day was done somewhat less than one hour from this and my camera was put away. Many would agree with this, but, when capturing a moment, you also match it the story that's going to be told or the emotions this image would bring up in people. So big part of it is, to be ready for that moment we don't know yet is happening. I can't tell you how many times we've been to this place, in every visit I had my camera, I took photos but this was the only time I was able to capture it like this. Don't leave the location until you have exhausted your resources. As I first said when I share this photo for the first time. Don't leave the beach until the sun comes down. You'd be amazed of what you see once it starts to get dark.
