Behind The Lens

Location

The picture was taken in Cavo (Cape) Greco, a southern-eastern headland in Cyprus. I am a hobbyist landscape photographer and rather new to it.

Time

I was visiting the island briefly and a day before I was leaving a friend asked me to go walking near the cape for some fresh air and sea views. At the time I was not in photography however my sister had a pink Sony camera as a gift and offered it to me to capture some shots to remind me of home. It was captured in May 2013.

Lighting

The sun's setting light was the only light source used. At the time I trusted the auto camera settings when capturing and when focused on the bench and with the sunset it did the trick.

Equipment

I used a Sony DSC-W630 with fixed lens (f/2.6), shutter speed 1/160 sec., ISO 80, focal length 4 mm, aperture 2.75 at 16 MP. No tripod used and I couldn't get the same view laying the camera on the rocky ground. I did hold my breath however believing it will get me more steady to take the shot.

Inspiration

While I was walking with my friend who I haven't seen for long we had time to look around. While going uphill the blinding sunset light immediately got our attention. As we kept going up, the landscape was getting revealed before our squinted eyes. We both looked at each other and with no further discussion we knew we had to save this moment. I wanted to capture this when the clouds allowed a full sunset to be seen but at the same time I risked losing it. It was worth it. I had no idea the scenery could ever be so breath taking. I guess I've never went on holiday in my own country and that I should praise my little island. This picture was one reason I was inspired to get into photography.

Editing

I took the shot thinking no post-processing was necessary. I didn't even know how to make it any better (not even adjusting sharpness).

In my camera bag

Nowadays I always carry a Canon EOS 650D body which is easy to work with and good for beginners. I also carry a standard 18-55mm IS II lens and a Canon 75-300mm III lens for sniping. I carry an extra battery, mains and car charger, lens cleaning material. In very sunny days I use an ultraviolet filter. I like having them all with me as it makes me feel complete and ready to capture THE shot.

Feedback

Definitely get any tripod that will do the job for landscape photography. This kind of photography always needs post-processing so might be worth for one to self-educate. Try and plan beforehand and be ready for the moment or if you have to capture really quick do so in any way and any settings (RAW format) and then make it look better afterwards. Don't lose the shot. Always get your kit even if you think there's nothing to capture. You never know when the inner-photographer will emerge and say "capture"!
