Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph is nothing less than an adventurous ride into the unknown and unseen! It was just by chance that I, while on a trip to Gangtok with my family, walked on this beautiful landscape where this antique hut stood solely, almost as if calling out to me for a photograph that would imprint it's presence on our hearts forever.

Time

It was a cold winter's afternoon when this photograph was captured in all it's natural glory and warmth. Although we were all freezing to our very cores, the way the sun shone on the beautiful snow covered mountains and this particular hut was magnificent.

Lighting

This photograph was blessed with ample natural lighting. The sun shone on the hut brightly along with the snowy peaks to reveal a marvelous view as if this photograph was bound to happen!

Equipment

A beautiful capture does not need any fancy and high tech equipment, just like this particular photograph. All I used was my very humble Sony DSC W520 and a steady foot so I wouldn't slip and fall on the ice!

Inspiration

Gangtok is blessed with beautiful landscapes like these. While visiting a famous temple nearby, I happened to stray my path just a little and find this gorgeous haven, a hut that stood alone, old and rusty in the middle of a picturesque valley covered with snow. Something about this lone haven captured my imagination and I felt connected to it immediately. I imagined snuggling in a blanket inside with a warm cup of coffee and a good book. I wanted to capture this moment to always remember that very comforting feeling.

Editing

Although the original version of this photograph was perfect enough, I wanted to add an antique and rusty feeling to it for which I used Lightroom to add "Sepia" feature to the background. Apart from that, I kept it simple so that it looks like something right out one of your storybooks.

In my camera bag

Being a medical student, I lack resources to get high tech accessories for now. But I have realized the camera I have been using so far does a bang up job. I always carry my DSC W520 around along with my Nexus 5, for capturing good moments. Hopefully, I will own the DSLR I have my eyes on very soon!

Feedback

Gangtok in India is one of those places where I got to witness abrupt weather changes such as snow, sun, wind and rain in just one day! So one of the best advice I could give is to take your time while capturing a landscape you love. Keep your eyes as well as heart open. Trust your instincts about the lighting and exposure. Wait for the right time as getting the perfect click is an essential part of the whole journey. Be mentally prepared about how you would like to capture all the diversity, colors, shades and patterns present in the landscape into a photograph. Remember you are not only portraying the place but also, yourself. So, let the creativity flow and aim for nothing less but a masterpiece.
