Behind The Lens

Location

For the last five years I have been doing hair & makeup photography for a client and good friend of mine, William Priestley. He owns a hair salon in Halifax, in England. Every few years he updates all of the 30x40 inch prints hanging on the walls inside his salon with new portraits of cuts, colours, up-dos and buzz cuts. I set up a small portrait studio in his salon, he does his magic and we shoot the models as they become ready. He is able to check the images as I shoot, because I shoot tethered to a laptop.

Time

The models arrive early morning and the styling begins. After that hair is done the makeup artist weaves her spell. The models are then directed by me as to choice of wardrobe for the portrait and we start shooting at around 11:00 AM for 4-5 hours, finishing at around 18:00.

Lighting

Yes. More than I could say on here, but in essence I love lighting... cinematic, meaningful and impactful lighting. Lighting has three facets: strength, quality and texture. Lighting modifiers are key, as well as tone. Films like The Godfather, Leon and Blade Runner have such depth and impact in the lighting, even though they look very different. I could drone on about lighting till I am gray...and I probably will

Equipment

Canon 7D, tripod, three studio heads, beauty dish, reflectors, large softbox, snoot and scrims

Inspiration

Martha's stunning complexion, her red lips, the dark top I chose for her and her soulful eyes. The image just exudes Italian romance, the graceful power of a woman.

Editing

Yes, retouched the skin and hair and removed any dust / debris from the clothing and background.

In my camera bag

Canon 7D, prime lenses, tripod and lighting

Feedback

Don't believe the screen on the back of the camera. Shoot for the histogram and slightly under-expose. Don't clip your hightlights, make sure your colour balance is set correctly and use a tripod whenever possible.
