Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at one of our local prairie restoration sites near Holmes Lake in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Time

This image took some time to make. "Seger" the black lab was too distracted with everything around him except me. He would go sniff here and there, and wasn't really into me taking his picture until we started playing hide-n-go-seek! I hid behind a big cedar tree, jumped out calling his name and "click". That element of surprise made his tail wag and ears perk up just a bit.

Lighting

It was a late hazy, warm Autumn afternoon. Indirect, soft light as the cedars off to the left filtered the sunlight through their pine needle.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 70-200mm f2.8, handheld.

Inspiration

I lost my 7 year old German Shepherd , Jarko, about a year ago and was fortunate to have a good stack of images since he was just an 8 week old pup. That connection and bond that one creates with these animals is as strong and sometimes stronger than the ones we create with other human beings. So I wanted to make other dog owners were fortunate as I was to be able to look back at those priceless moments in time.

Editing

I didn't have to do a whole lot of editing. I did use Adobe Lightroom5 to convert the image to black and white.

In my camera bag

It depends on what I am going to shoot. For landscapes I'll take the CanonD Mark III and bring along the Canon 14mm f2.8 and the Canon 24-70mm f2.8. For wildlife I'll typically carry the Canon 70-200mm and the Canon 100-400mm lenses. Memory cards, SanDisk, (3@32G), Manfrotto Carbon Fiber Tripod. I try and keep it as light as I can.

Feedback

Taking pictures of dogs can be a challenge. My advice would be to try and capture the true nature of the dog, for example... If you are photographing an old lazy Bulldog; photograph it doing exactly that, being lazy.
