Location
This beautiful sunrise was take on Merritt Is. Fl. on Feb 22, 2014. It is one of my favorite and most popular sunrise photo I have had the pleasure of seeing and photographing.Time
The time of the day was just right at 6:59 AM as the sun rose above the low fog bank. The opportunity presented itself for only a few minutes.Lighting
The lighting for this photograph was just about perfect as it made the sun look like ball floating on a low cloud.Equipment
Nikon D4 camera, Nikon 400mm f/2.8, handheld, shutter 1/3200, f/3.2, ISO 200 EV + 0.67Inspiration
My friend David Turko, along with my wife Becky took the early morning trip to Merritt Is. NWR to look for and photograph the interesting wildlife, but especially looking for the bobcat that was appearing along the roads and trails. We stopped at one of the roadside pull offs and just happen to see the sun rising to the east.. It looking just like a bright ball floating in a soup of fog.It wasn't a planned shot just one that happened to present itself to all of us.Editing
I tried to do minor post-processing like cropping, highlight/shadows, linear contrast, little noise reduction if it was needed and on this one I popped the colors a little. In my camera bag
It depends on what I am going out to photograph. For wildlife usually it is my Nikon D4 camera (Now a Nikon D750 and a Nikon D500), 400mm f/2.8, a smaller lens for landscape, a walk around Nikon 80-400mm. 2 teleconverters, my backup camera body at the time was a Nikon D300s. Tripod for the 400mm lens and a smaller tripod for landscape.Feedback
It really is a matter of going out and being present when the opportunity present itself. Be prepared by carrying with you the correct combination of equipment. I just happen to get a chance at this shot with the big Nikon 400mm lens and handheld it to grab this one at 1/3200 shutter speed. Because it was such a fast shutter speed my photo was turned out well. I normal only used that 400mm lens supported by a tripod or another stable platform. If I had the chance I probably would have gotten the tripod out to support the equipment weight.
