My son and I took a trip out before the new school year started and he was willing for once to pose quickly for me. He does not like posing. In this one I just love the smile he has on his face as it is his natural one. Usually he puts on a forced one and it jsut does not look right.

Behind The Lens

Location

This image of my son was took on a path behind the tram station in Laxey, Isle of Man. The path had lots of trees lining it.

Time

It was took around 4pm in the afternoon after we had took a trip up to Snaefell which is a mountain top in the Isle of Man. We were waiting for the electric tram back to our town when I decided the light was soft enough for a couple of images of my son.

Lighting

It was afternoon sunlight so not too harsh. A slight golden haze to it. The image was purely natural lighting and picking the best place where it wasn't completely shaded or direct either. Just nice warm sunlight and a bit of luck for it to be in the right place at that time.

Equipment

I used a Sony A77 ii with a Tamron 17-55mm 2.8 lens and lens hood. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I am forever trying to get photos of my son as he's a bit of a reluctant model. While we were waiting for our tram back home, he was playing near the path where the image was taken. I saw how nice the light looked in the spot and I was luckily able to convince him (bribery with chocolate helps) to allow me to take a few photos. I knew the images would look good on this spot and luckily he was willing to go along for a few shots. He got bored pretty quick so I had very little time to get him in a pose and take the image. But I'm very happy with the photo I got and so is my son. He loves it!

Editing

The only post processing I did was converting from raw to jpeg and a filter over the image called Crossify in Lightroom. I'm a big believer in not over processing an image. I like to keep my images as natural as possible.

In my camera bag

I try and keep my bag as light as possible so I normally only carry my Sony A77 ii, Tamron 17-55mm 2.8, Minolta 50mm 1.7, Sigma 90mm 2.8, spare batteries, lots of memory cards, wired remote and either a monopod or light tripod. I occasionally carry my flashgun with spare batteries.

Feedback

When capturing outdoor portraits, I feel there is nothing better than natural light. Either in the morning or later afternoon. Softer glows are particularly flattering and lovely to look at. Midday sun should be avoided as it can create harsh shadows. Look for a place that is pretty and nothing too distracting in the background. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time as this image was took after a day out. So take the opportunity when you see it! Don't let it pass you by. Last thing you want is to think later on, "Gosh, I wish I took a few photos there.".
