Sometimes it's not about your gear, it's about your knowledge.
Let me start by saying that I've spent quite a bit of money buying the latest photography gadget, and honestly even using all those gadgets that I had I wasn't able to notice a significant improvement in my photography. Suddenly I realized that the gear wasn't the problem, nor was the technical aspect of photography, since that by that point I had already master the basic concepts of f-stop, exposure, DOF and ISO.
Thankfully, one day just like being struck by a lighting I understood that I was lacking the basic foundations of composition, once I "detected" the issue I started to work toward fixing it. I spent a couple hundred dollars (money that would not buy even the cheapest lens out there) buying books and just like a miracle I saw a significant improvement in my work. Sure, it still far from where I would like it to be, but every time that I go out with my camera and I experiment with photography I get to learn something that I would never had learned should I keep just buying new lens to try overcome my frustration.
