Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a Cape Cod beach in Falmouth, MA. It is one of more than 100 beaches on Cape Cod. This beach is on the ocean side of the Cape where waters are warmer from the Gulf Stream.

Time

My favorite times to take landscape photos is around sunrise and sunset. This particular image was taken at sunrise, just before the sun peaked over the horizon. My favorite sunrise and sunset photos are when the sun is not in the picture and showing the beautiful colors but not the bright light.

Lighting

When the sun itself is not in the photo, metering is easy because there isn't the high contrast lighting caused by the sun. I mostly use automatic metering, usually aperture priority, but I also like to use manual metering so I can easily bracket the scene to improve my chances of a good exposure.

Equipment

A tripod is a must for sunrises and sunsets, especially when the sun is not included in the image. I shot this image with a Canon 6D at f/10 for lots of depth of field. This required a 4 second shutter speed for a good exposure. I always use 100 ISO for optimal sharpness and clarity. The 4 second exposure gave me the smooth looking water, a popular effect these days, but not one I use all the time.

Inspiration

When I travel, I like to get up early to capture the local scenes when the light is best and people there not to work around.

Editing

I did very little post processing with this image. The softness of the colors came naturally from the sun. I may have added a little contrast and color for impact, but I try to keep it as natural looking as possible.

In my camera bag

When I travel to locations on a airplane, I travel light with my Sony A6000, a couple of lenses and a travel tripod. When I travel locally, or by car or motorhome, I have my Canon 6D and a myriad of lenses and other equipment with me. Images with my Sony A6000, a crop-sensor camera, are often as good as I can take with my full frame sensor Canon. Sometimes, size doesn't matter.

Feedback

When I am planning to shoot a sunrise, I scout different areas first so I know where I am going when I get up early in the morning. Foreground interest is a must. I also make sure that the sun will be in a good position for what I want to capture. And lastly, before I head out, I make sure the sky is relatively clear so the sun will actually light the sky in the beautiful, unpredictable ways that it does.
