Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Wells Beach in Maine. I visit Southern Maine every year for the food and photography. It's only 90 minutes north of Boston so it's not a long trip from Massachusetts.

Time

This was taken at sunrise. I find sunrises preferable over sunsets because there are less people around which gives me more composition choices. I also like the quiet serenity I got only with a sunrise.

Lighting

I was attracted to the flat, wet rock reflecting the orange light from the sun. It made for an unusual sunrise look.

Equipment

I use Sony mirrorless cameras. This shot was taken on a tripod with a somewhat slow shutter speed because of the low light. I try to always shoot at the optimum 100 ISO.

Inspiration

I visit this location every summer. It's not a very busy place and it always produces some of the most beautiful sunrises on the New England coast.

Editing

My post processing is minimal. I adjust for light and contrast, and clean up any distracting elements in my images. I spend most of my time on the composition. I imaging my photos as if I were a painter to determine where I want the elements of the photo to fall.

In my camera bag

I travel light. I use a crop sensor when I fly to my destination. I use a full frame when I drive to it. I carry a short zoo, a wide zoom, flash, and ND filters. ND filters are a must for long exposures.

Feedback

Scout locations before the shoot if you can. Return to the same shooting location on different days as the light and sky changes make for completely different photos. In touristy locations, spend more time shooting in the morning, before 10am, before the tourists come out and block your landscape views.
