Behind The Lens

Location

The Photo was taken in my Home Studio in Bel Air, Maryland. I have been an artist and photographer for over 45 years.

Time

I shot this photo in the late evening using Light Painting. It was shot with over 12 layers combined into a single image with various layer adjustments. Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 was my program of choice because of its wide range of flexibility.

Lighting

Lighting was done by painting with various small LED flashlights. I left my lens open to Bulb for 10 seconds for each exposure. I shot as many as 30 exposures but did not use them all. It was to find which layers in Photoshop I liked most. This is my favorite way to take pictures.

Equipment

My Camera is a Nikon D800 with a Nikon 85 mm lens. I love to photograph old items and old buildings for their richness and age. My tripod is a Bogen.

Inspiration

A was in a local hardware store and met a man to whom I asked, "I wonder whatever happened to the old time oil cans", he replied, "Times have changed but I still have a collection of several." He let me borrow them for this shot from which I gave him a free copy.

Editing

This way of shooting requires hours of post-processing work.

In my camera bag

Normally I use a portable screen or laptop to use as a viewer attached to my camera and carry a wide assortment of LED lighting apparatus from penlight to large panels. Also, I have a wide variety of colored filters and lenses from wide-angle to telephoto. I also use at times a shutter release cable. I learned this technique from other Light Painting artists and trial and error.

Feedback

This is the most rewarding way for me to capture a visual sense of what I want to see after finding the right subject matter.
