Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a summers day at "The Mole", a local haven for fishing, surfing and swimming, in Wanganui, New Zealand. There was a very large tree washed up on the beach, which my daughter sat upon and I took my shot.

Time

It was late afternoon, when my children and I decided to take a walk down to the beach. The sun was shining, a few clouds and a warm gentle breeze. Perfect beach weather!! After a few family shots of kids being kids at the beach, I decided it was time to whip my daughter into some posing action.

Lighting

It was a mostly cloudless afternoon, with the sun making it was out to sea to the right of the photo. No extra lighting source was used.

Equipment

At the time of this photo, I was really just discovering the joy of photography, the only camera in the house was my daughters, Nikon Coolpix S220, which was used for this photo and many more for a few years till I finally upgraded from the point and shoot camera to a Nikon D3200.

Inspiration

There were a number of factors that inspired me to take this photo, it was a beautiful day, family fun had me in high spirits, and I always love the way my daughter shows up in photos, so photogenic.Plus the way the breeze was blowing bits of her hair into her face I found beautiful and wanted to capture it.

Editing

I liked the photo how it was, and didn't really feel it needed much done to it, i decided to try the photo out in black and white and sepia, liked the sepia effect and left the photo at that.

In my camera bag

My camera bag always contains the same few simple things, my 18-55mm lens, my 55-200mm lens. Two spare memory cards, a pen and my green notebook, which I use to badly do sketches and make notes of ideas for photos I would like to try.

Feedback

This photo for me wasn't about planning out what I wanted to capture and going to do it, it was more of day out and taking the camera just incase. It was a photo of just being in the moment, and loving that moment, of course I did direct her to where I wanted her to be for the photo and her pose, but minimal direction as I wasn't really wanting a to posed/planned out look, just a natural day out look.
