Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken at the entrance to Red Rock Canyon just outside of Las VegasTime
It was taken just before sundown.Lighting
The colors and shadows are more prominent early morning and late evening. The warm colors of sunset deepen the colors in the mountains.Equipment
This is an HDR image shot on a Canon 60d with a 18-55mm f-35.-5.6 lens . I did not have a tripod so I set it on a pole and used the timer for the shot.Inspiration
I had never need in the desert and was looking to try and capture a sunset. This scene disappeared quickly as the sun started down behind another mountain.Editing
The HDR image was processed on Photomatix software to combine the 3 ecposures that were 2 stops each.In my camera bag
I now carry a new Canon 6D with various lenses. I prefer to shoot with wide angle for landscapes so the 17-40mm f4 is my go to lens. I have various tripods as I also try and shoot all my landscapes at f22 so exposures may be long.Feedback
Landscapes are often luck and timing. Try and be early morning or late evening before sunset to get the best lighting. Once I find the scene, I will typically set up and compose the shot and stay right there shooting every 10 minutes or so as the lighting changes quickly. If you try and keep mooving and changing composition you might have missed the best capture of the day. Shoot often and pick your best.
