Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a local park right next to our local high school.

Time

I was asked to help take dance team photos for the start of the dance team year which my daughter formerly was a member of. Being involved in this program for the 4 years prior gave me great insight to my manual settings and also brought my love of photography into full force.

Lighting

Sun was a concern that day. We started at 9:00 a.m. and I had to continually move around to avoid shadows. What I love about this photo is that we were walking from one location to the next, when I looked up and saw the potential for the photo with my naked eye, I yelled for them to stop right there and this shot was taken. I love coming home to upload and view my photos. You never know what you're gonna find and I immediately knew here that I had a "picture of the day".

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Canon 60D, F20, 1/160, Flash was used, but I don't think it affected the subjects because they were too far away. In the end, that was a good thing because it's the silhouettes that make the shot.

Inspiration

I got lucky when I saw this photo. I am always nervous when I agree to help take photos for someone, but even though I am no longer a part of this dance organization, I volunteered my help immediately because the program gave so much to my daughter, and again, it helped me find my passion for photography.

Editing

Post editing: I threw in more contrast and a bit of saturation to make the blue even better.

In my camera bag

I started out with a Canon 30D and finally upgraded to the Canon 60D. I am just an amateur photographer, but I find that this camera really stepped up my photographs. I used my 18-200mm lens because I knew it would cover individual and group photos. This photo is at 18mm. I also carry the 50mm 1.8 lens for portrait shots.

Feedback

To take a shot like this, it's all about lighting. This day, I happened to get lucky, because I wasn't looking for the shot. The shot presented itself to me. That is what I love about photography!!!
